WPATH GEI Online It’s About Time: Concerns of Middle Aged and Older Transgender and Gender Diverse Individuals

Date & Time

Didactic Pre-Recorded Sessions Available after June 20, 2025

Live Session: Wednesday, July 9, 2025 – 12:30pm – 3:30pm Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)

Across the world, the proportion of older adults in developed countries is growing. One hundred years ago, the percentage of older adults in the US was ~3%; now it is over 17% and expected to reach 22% by 2040. This is a 40% increase to 55.8 million in the last 10 years. For the first time ever, in a few years, the number of those 65 years and older will exceed the number of individuals under 18. There has been intense concern about social and medical gender transitions among TGD young people but sparse research into middle aged and older TGD individuals’ experiences. This workshop attempts to begin to fill in the wide gap of knowledge about these populations.

Medical, biological, psychological, neuropsychological, and legal concerns will be addressed in this course through 3 hours of pre-recorded didactic sessions and required attendance on Wednesday July 9, 2025, for a 3-hour live Q&A panel session with all faculty. Presentations of middle aged and older TGD individuals who have experienced both negative and positive outcomes in accessing services across the biopsychosocial spectrum will be included. Myths, stereotypes, and the effects of intersectionality of ageism, ableism and transphobia will be addressed. Lastly, the potential role of these populations in helping the young to imagine a better future will be described as this appears lacking in some nihilistic youth who have never encountered a middle aged or older TGD person.
